WHAT IS LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY?
Landscape Photography is the discipline of photographing nature, the outdoors and the world around us. Landscape photography contains several branches, each with their own subject matter e.g. Seascapes, Cityscapes, Skyscapes.
In its most basic form a landscape photograph captures the view for others to later experience, and in effect see what the photographer saw. It is desirable, where possible, to elevate the photograph to one that portrays what was also experienced at the time and to build an emotional connection between the viewer and the photo.
Styles can vary significantly, with representational “as seen” photography at one end of the spectrum and more abstract representation at the other that starts to blur the line between landscape photography and abstract photography.
Matt approaches the landscape by identifying the main hook; it could be as simple as the feeling a landscape gives. Next comes the difficult bit! Which compositional elements best portray that feeling? Now, how can all the other noise in the landscape be arranged or removed so not to detract?
The Sussex landscape takes in the chalky hills of the South Downs threading its way across the county, ancient woodland and many scenes to be savoured, such as; bluebell woods, iron age forts and Roman roads. The selection of Sussex photos are also joined by images from across the South of England.
